For those who
may not be familiar with the Koala Social and Sporting Club Inc. here are
some enlightening facts.
In 1988 the
Koala Social Club took over from the Black Buety Social Club and
formed a new committee under the guidance of Don McKenzie, as
President, and John O'Connell as Treasurer. We then named the Club,
adopted the colours of gold and green and recruited
new members, many of whom are still with us. with the assistance and
support from The Koala Corporation, who had only then taken over
The Melanasia Hoteland Resort, as well as the local Police,
The Hervey Bay City Council and the Justice Department we
proceeded to register the Club and obtain appropriate permits and licences
to operate The Kondari Flea Market on the corner of Kruger Court
and Booral Road, Urangan, Hervey Bay Qld. Australia.
In the
market's early days we had a roll up of some twenty to thirty stalls along
with co-ordinating raffles. Then we thought we were busy! Now the Club
boasts some 230 up to 285 stalls at peak times. Now we know we are busy!
On Right: One of the very
first Food Stalls used by the Club
It was at
this point that the Club had food vans built to health regulations and
registered and proceeded to run the markets.
The
market runs every 2nd, 4th and 5th (where applicable) Sundays of
the month. The Club has a membership of 65 people with a
consistent core working crew of around sixteen. The work for
market day organisers commences at around 4am with certainly no
lack of jobs: Vans to set up, tarps to erect, signs to put out,
tables and chairs placed, eskies to stock, rubbish bins
strategically placed around the grounds. Following this is the
allocation of sites to the casual stall holders, then off to bring
down our two cold rooms and, thanks to Urangan Fisheries, pick up
extra ice. There's also the behind-the-scenes chores as well as
the ladies doing the shopping and preparing from Thursday on. Of
course, there is the never ending job of mowing and maintaining
the grounds and site areas having to be marked out for every
market day.
Obviously
there's a lot involved in organising a market but the overall satisfaction
of helping those who need and appreciate the Club's assistance makes it
all worthwhile. When the time comes to assess who our donations go to for
the week, the urgent, needy ones get first preference.
As with all
clubs they have to make do with what they have but looking ahead has now
guaranteed The Koala Social & Sporting Club new premises. The house and
land that the Club has leased, with the option to buy, at 6 Florence
Street, Urangan already has a live-in caretaker with security fencing and
lighting completed. The premises were in serious need of attention and
after a $4,000 refit, such as painting, power testing, mowing, fencing and
gates, the Club now has a well cared for location. Thanks to Lowie's
Signs, the sign writing and Club emblem on the house and vans is also
completed.
